April
9 was declared by the national government as the "Araw Ng Kagitingan"
in honor of the Filipinos and Americans who fought in defense of our
freedom and for the future of democracy in this part of the world. In
reality though, April 9 is for all the people who fought in all fronts
for our commitment in living a free and just society. It is then also
for the veterans of the Vietnam War, for the Korean War and for our
soldiers who bravely defended our constitution and our freedom.
Our
beloved city displayed a sense of patriotism and with pride, conducted a
program held at the Rizal Park last Saturday, April 9 at 5 o'clock in
the afternoon. The program was participated by our local veterans
headed by the President of the Iligan Chapter of the Philippine Veterans
Association Col. Marcos Betacura, who narrated his war time
experiences. A film showing was also presented to the audience to give
them a glimpse of the horrors of war.
On the lighter side, several singing groups led by the Agus Band rendered some songs to lighten up the atmosphere.
